Why isn't HTTPS free?

Understand why HTTPS costs money everywhere in the world.

HTTPS is achieved by installing SSL Certificates onto web servers. Each certificate needs to be generated PER web address, or per domain if you buy a wildcard certificate.

At the very top of the industry, companies have to pay large licensing fees to have their "root" certificate trusted by all the major browsers. To avoid getting into complex details, let's just be clear, EVERYONE has to pay for SSL Certificates, and those fees with added services get passed down ultimately to the consumer. Pretty standard stuff for ANYTHING you buy, be it digital product or physical product. Even if you find some free certificate somewhere, SOMEONE is paying for it if not you. You also have to be careful WHO generates your certificate because any compromise of your certificate keys results in your website not having any real secure transmissions at all. Just like your car, if they got your keys, they can steal it.

So EVERYONE has to pay for SSL, and if you want it, because Google kinda forced us into it, you also have to pay for it. Again, not uncommon to pay for products that you decide you want. The not so fun factor, is that so many website owners feel forced into it by the monopoly giants of the tech industry. But it is what it is.

Now normally the cost of SSL Certificates is quite high and need renewed every single year!

  1. Single Certificate (www.yourdomain.com) $99/yr average

  2. Wildcard Certificate (anything.yourdomain.com) $340/yr average

On top of that high cost, renewing it every year is not like renewing a domain name. Which is just pay and go. No no, renewing a certificate means you have to generate a request, upload the request file, pay, then download the SSL certificate, then go to your hosting server and install the certificate which can be varying degrees of difficulty.  Failure to renew your certificate will result in HUGE FULL PAGE RED warnings in browsers preventing your visitors from seeing your website. So be sure you remember to renew weeks ahead of expiry! Don't want to catch that after the damage is done!

WHATS THE GOOD NEWS?

The good news is that EWS went through great expense re-engineering our software to support SSL, and we did it in such a way to be completely painless process for you! We wanted to be sure you could quickly, easily, in fact, automatically, get SSL for all your websites and web addresses without any of the huge expense and hassle normally associated with it.

So we made ALL SSL FREE AND AUTOMATIC for members on our Distributor or Leader plans! You can take advantage of all the extra services that come with those plans, including the peace of mind that EVERY domain you have will automatically be SECURED and renewed for you every year ahead of schedule!

This amounts to huge savings as many of you have 3 - 15 website addresses that need secured, not to mention the hassle-free deployment!

WHATS THE BAD NEWS?

Sorry, we couldn't possibly afford to offer free SSL on the Starter plan, which already offers massive value in comparison to industry services. See our pricing comparison chart (https://www.enagicwebsystem.com/?c=pricing#comparison). It would take a large software investment to re-engineer things to be à la carte which was originally decided against in favor of free-for-all-domains model.

If you want HTTPS, you'll have to upgrade, but bear in mind the massive value increase in other services you get as well! Not only will you get more free add-on options, but you'll get our SEO Boost package which proactively gives every website you have that extra boost it needs to get noticed in the vast online world!
