What is an SSL Certificate?

I've been told my site should have an SSL Certificate. What does SSL mean?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer and these are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organization's details. When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the https protocol and allows secure connections from a web server to a browser.

This basically protects the information on your site. SSL allows sensitive information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, and login credentials to be transmitted securely.
