In order to ensure Google Tag Manager installed on your site allows proper tracking, it is required that GTM users follow the next steps on the Consent Mode settings:
1. Update Google Tag Manager (GTM)
In GTM, ensure that all relevant tags (e.g., Google Analytics, Google Ads) depend on the consent signals provided by Consent Mode.
Steps to configure GTM:
1. Open Google Tag Manager and navigate to your container.
2. For each relevant tag (e.g., GA4, Ads):
- Open the tag.
- Check the 'Consent settings' section.
- Enable the 'Require Consent' option for 'ad_storage' and 'analytics_storage'.
2. Validate Implementation
After completing the setup, use Google Tag Assistant to verify that consent signals are sent correctly to Google services. Confirm that the parameters 'ad_storage' and 'analytics_storage' are transmitted as 'granted' or 'denied' based on user actions.
3. Monitor in Google Analytics
Check Google Analytics DebugView to confirm that events are recorded appropriately and align with user consent preferences. Verify that the Consent Mode does not block key events, such as 'optin' or 'conversion'.
Closing Notes
This implementation is critical for ensuring GDPR compliance and maintaining accurate data measurement. If any issues arise, review the configuration in GTM and consult the Google Tag Assistant or DebugView tools.
Integration of 3rd Party Scripts
You may integrate your own scripts for tracking, marketing, or live help for example. For industry standard 3rd parties, you can actually add them via Google Tag Manager dashboard once you have GTM setup on your site.
If you can't setup via GTM, we have provided a regulations compliant way to add your code. To learn how to do this in a safe way, read about Global Settings > Compliant Script Code here.
